Vocational Rehabilitation
Vocational rehabilitation focuses on supporting clients to develop greater understanding of the impact their brain injury can have on work related skills. Clients are encouraged to consider and explore vocational options and to take into account their strengths, interests and difficulties. In addition, where required, future housing options are also explored in joint sessions with Occuaptional Therapy.
This client-centred approach is aimed at empowering clients to take increasing responsibility for their own rehabilitation outcomes and future independence. This approach is fundamental if a return to the workplace, or re-training, is to be a realistic, achievable and sustainable option.
Sessions
The Vocational Department provides independent and group sessions including Vocational Studies, Group Projects, Workplace Study Group, Future Planning, Job/College/Training Search and Work Experience Placements where appropriate.
Session work aims to reflect clients’ interests whilst focusing on individually assessed needs, which is vital if clients are to sustain motivation towards their rehabilitation. Through this approach, clients aim to reduce the impact of their disability and dependency on others and focus on increasing their independence, awareness and insight into how their strengths and difficulties are likely to impact on their future life, particularly in a working or learning environment.
Clients have the opportunity to explore, consider and identify realistic vocational options and opportunities. This may mean re-adjusting plans or letting go of unrealistic expectations to achieve a positive outcome.
Multi-disciplinary working
The nature of vocational rehabilitation means that it continually underpins the work of the multi-disciplinary team (developing strategies, functional skills, confidence, insight, attention, stamina and the ability to work and communicate effectively with others) and focuses on clients’ progress and how this relates and impacts on their future.
