Course description
This course will take you to a level of skills and knowledge that will help you find and keep work in this trade.
Pre-entry Requirements
- A good standard of literacy and
- numeracy is required as reading,
- writing and measuring form a part of this course.
- You will need to be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide, but you can brush up these skills in College.
- You will need to be able to lift and carry materials and finished products.
- A College assessment will be undertaken. A driving license is preferable.
Course Content

What skills will I learn?
- Basic joints and working on drawings
- Cutting lists and material calculations
- How to make a rod and its use
- How to make a carpenter’s stool from a drawing using hand tools
- Window construction
- Door, doorframe and lining construction and hanging
- Design and use of various studding
- Ground and upper floor joists and decking
- Trussed rafter roofs and cut roofs
- Accessing
- Relevant Health & Safety
What Qualification do we offer?
City & Guilds Level 1 Cert. in Basic Construction Skills – Carpentry & Joinery (6217-02)
Employment Opportunities
Work in 1st or 2nd fixing (site work), as a carpenter’s assistant, in a joinery workshop, or become self-employed. You will still be expected to do a work placement first. Prior to joining College, it is very important that you look at the job market in your home area and check the salary level you may start at.
