Course description
This course will take you to the level of skill and knowledge needed to help you find and keep a job in this trade.
Pre-entry Requirements
- A reasonable standard of literacy and numeracy is required as reading, writing & measuring form a part of this course, but help will be given with this
- You must have good eyesight, the ability to use hand tools, and preferably a driving license.
Course Content
The course will include all the basic skills, together with the knowledge of all the materials tools and equipment and how to use them.
What skills will I learn?
- Preparation e.g. cleaning, stripping, undercoating
- Rust removal and priming of metal
- Painting – with water and oil-based paints
- Painting doors and window frames
- Artex and coving of ceiling areas
- Paper hanging
- Removal and refitting of water-filled radiators
Other options can include:
- Spray painting
- Decorative paint techniques e.g. marbling, rag rolling, design techniques, special effects
What qualification do we offer?
- City and Guilds Level 1 Certificate in Basic Construction Skills – Painting and Decorating (6217-03)
Employment Opportunities
You could expect to work as a Painter/Decorator within the building or maintenance industry. Self-employment may also be an option. Prior to joining College, it is very important that you look at the job market in your home area and check the salary level you may start at. There are many opportunities for women in this industry!
Course Length - Flexible with up to 39 weeks training plus work experience.
